This document "Plants for the Future" sets out a vision for European plant biotechnology and genomics research. It identifies a number of strategic priorities, main activities and a road map to meet these priorities and sets important milestones. The potential contributions of these technologies to high quality, healthy and affordable food, to agricultural and environmental sustainability and to the competitiveness of the agrifood, forestry and related industries are highlighted. The vision was jointly developed by relevant stakeholders, among whom representatives of the biotechnology industry, research, food and seed industries, farmers and consumers. The report recommends the establishment of a technology platform, as proposed by the European Council of Brussels in March 2003, to integrate further stakeholders and develop a long term strategic research agenda and an action plan for this sector.
